* Do you listen to part and then jump in, interrupting, assuming you know what the other person wants to say?

* Do you listen with the intention to strengthen your case so you will win?

* Are you listening but unwilling to move from your point of view or stance?

* Are you listening with the willingness to learn and have your mind changed?

* Do you listen with empathy for the other person's point of view?

* Do you listen with concern for the other person's well being?

* Do you listen with the intention of finding a win /win solution?

How did you do? Very few people actually listen without projecting their own motive. In a business partnership and every other relationship there has to be an equality of listening. Consider some of these suggestions and practice them in the next conversation that comes your way:

* Get rid of the idea that you have to be right. If you have an investment in being right, you have already closed down your ability to hear. Besides if you are always right that means the other person is always wrong. Does that really compute?

* Listen with an open mind. There are a lot of other ideas and perspectives out there. Many of them are good and some are better than yours.

* Repeat back what you have heard to make sure you have clearly understood what was said.

* Forget about preparing your response. Respond after you listened well. There is nothing wrong with taking your time. If you want time to mull something over, say so and promise to get back about it.

* Express your own point of view and feelings honestly and with respect for the listener. These skills take discipline and practice.

Listening is a practiced discipline. So practice, practice, practice. Create conversations just for the point of practicing these skills. It will benefit not only your business partnership but you as an individual. A lot of wisdom is gained by simply listening to others in your life, not to mention, the personal insights you receive into the lives of those around you.

What you really think of your partner in the long run will be revealed in the relationship you have. If resentment or disrespect enters into the relationship it is very hard to mend. Sometimes these are not business related but will affect the business relationship. I cannot stress enough the importance of confronting an issue when it arises. A simple mistake or misunderstanding can take on a life of its own if not dealt with in a timely and honest manner.

* Are there things you avoid speaking to your partner about?

* Do you have secrets?

* Do you feel annoyance, anger, resentment?

* Over what issue are these feelings?

* Do you need to be right?

* Can you put your point of view aside and be determined to listen with an open mind?
